An interactive map to click through people's discoveries, experiences and sentimental moments.

The project
Designate is an interactive world map that allows individuals to pinpoint their favourite locations and show off the pictures they took there to tell their story; why that place has meaning to them. The interface will operate as both a utility to explore, as well as a platform to share content such as photography, videography and text-based stories from across the world. Which is why this counter-mapping approach is beneficial.
The platform caters to people of all ages, but specific to those who are inclined towards travel/tourism and photography. The concept of the sharing layout and mechanics incentivize those who are passionate about this field to both share their content and stories, as well as find new places to see and explore. The overarching theme of the project is to highlight the beauty of our world from many different perspectives across hundreds of countries that users have lived/visited, and through sharing, encourage users to visit these new places.
Crowdsourcing
A Google Form will be set-up to collect material from people across the world highlighting what the platform is and how they can collaborate. They will be asked to provide a file submission as well as a corresponding text-description to pin to a geographical location of their content.
At least 50 submissions in total need to be accumulated in order for Designate to be launched and the perimeters are endless. We want to encourage everyone to share their content whether from their home-town or from an unknown corner street they've visited just once. Participants can further use this platform as a means to demonstrate their content as a portfolio.
The 5 E's of experience
- Entice
To spread our message of helping travel-enthusiasts to discover and experience more of the beauty Earth has to offer, we will entice our audience through word-of-mouth and social media.
- Enter
When the viewer first lands on the webpage, they will be greeted by the "Designate" logo as well as a short synopsis of what the project is about. This will help guide them through the story.
- Engage
Unfortunately, the 3D globe option is not available for us to use, therefore the audience will be interacting with a 2D map showcasing various pins. Once they have clicked a pin of their choice, a floating text-box will appear of the respective contribution. The rest of the story will follow by scrolling down the text-box for the user to find more submissions organized by proximity to their chosen pin. In addition to more submissions, the users can also engage with the various profiles that have contributed to the project and have created a personal profile to showcase their work.
- Exit
To portray an ending to the project, a progress bar indicating how many pins the user has visited/has left will be integrated into the webpage. The user will then feel free to scroll past the map where they will be met with the Artists’ Statement portion of the project.
- Extend
To further extend this project, the users will have the opportunity to share the pins they’ve visited on social media such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. There will also be a link to the crowdsourcing form in case they too would like to submit their images and stories.
